With skyrocketing rent prices, housing prices and material costs, seemingly every major city in the country is looking for creative ways to help families access accessible and affordable housing.

Acts Housing has found a solution.

He literally does whatever it takes to help a family get the keys to their own home.

“A differentiator between the services we provide and what many other organizations are able to do is that we truly are a one-stop-shop for homeownership,” said Michael Gosman, President and CEO of ActsHousing.

In a CivicCon presentation on Monday, Gosman will dive into what Acts does, how the nonprofit has helped more than 3,000 Wisconsin families become homeowners, and how that success can be replicated here in Northwest Florida. or anywhere else where people are hungry for real solutions.

Acts was started 25 years ago by a coalition of urban churches in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and uses a model in which Acts team members work with families from the moment they start thinking buy a house until they move in and own it.

The non-profit organization helps families find the right home for them, whether it’s a ready-to-move home available on the market or a distressed foreclosure owned by a municipality. Its range of services includes homebuyer and financial coaching, real estate brokerage, home rehabilitation support, and grant and loan administration.

“Our model is unique, but we’ve replicated that approach. We’ve taken our approach from Milwaukee to another city, a little smaller than Pensacola, Wisconsin, called Beloit…This year we’re going to, believe- us, 35 transactions – helping 35 families buy homes – which, in a city of 35,000 people, can make a big difference.”

Nearly 90% of families who purchase homes using Acts’ services have low to moderate incomes, often living in substandard rental conditions. Through home ownership, they typically save at least $200 per month, which helps them pay for and maintain their home over the long term.

“At the block level, when you take a distressed and foreclosed house that often attracts crime and nuisance, and then in six months a family fixes that house, it lets the neighbors breathe a little easier, isn’t it? isn’t it?” Gosman asked rhetorically.

“It makes the block safer. It starts to build community where maybe there was no sense of community before, because you can’t really commune with vacant, distressed, foreclosed property. But you can definitely accommodate that neighbor who puts in all that work to try to improve their home and by extension improve your experience of living on the block.Because we have over 3,000 families who have purchased homes through to our program, there are blocks and sections of the city that they just feel a little bit different.”

Gosman’s free, open-to-the-public showing will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. on April 11 at the REX Theater, 18 N. Palafox St. in Pensacola.
