This new Netflix horror thriller has reached No. 1 in the movie charts

On paper, the new original Netflix movie Night teeth – some of the streamer’s already packed October content lineup – is going to look a bit like some things you’ve probably seen before. Doesn’t that sound familiar to you? Of the new movie official description via Netflix: “Undeclared student driver picks up two mysterious women for a night out across LA. But when he finds out about their bloodthirsty intentions – and their dangerous and dark hell – he must fight to stay alive.

This is essentially the years 2004 Collateral, just with vampires added this time around. There are other familiar plot notes as well, including the kind of difficult truce between humans and vampires that we’ve also seen before – but that’s the Collateral similarities that were quite striking to me. In this thriller, starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, a taxi driver inadvertently picks up an assassin. He forces the driver to take him to a series of planned shots.

Meanwhile back to Night teeth. “To earn extra money, eccentric student Benny (Jorge Lendeborg, Jr.) works in the moonlight as a driver for a night,” reads Netflix press material. “Her task: to drive two mysterious young women (Debby Ryan and Lucy Fry) into Los Angeles for a party night.

Eventually, Benny is embroiled in a war between the vampires and the protectors of the human world. The latter group is led by Benny’s brother, played by Raúl Castillo. “With the sunrise fast approaching,” the press document continued, “Benny is forced to choose between fear and temptation if he is to stay alive and save the City of Angels.”

Feedback from critics and viewers

Unfortunately, critics and audiences haven’t really enjoyed this movie since its release a few days ago.

More than Rotten tomatoes, the film has an average audience score of 49%. The film has an even worse reviews score of 35%, based on 31 reviews to date. Like this review (with a score of 2 out of 4), by RogerEbert.com: “Vampires are treated as one of many clichés in this underwhelming action-horror comedy that has little charisma on its own.”

Fast facts on the Night teeth movie

One interesting thing to note about this film concerns the music. The soundtrack was crafted so that each neighborhood of LA in the film has its own distinct sound. That’s according to Netflix, which adds that the aesthetic of the soundtrack was inspired in part by the Grand Theft Auto video games.

Meanwhile, this film also covered the periods before and after COVID.

Night teeth was filmed in New Orleans. At one point, the production moved to Los Angeles to complete. Then came the first COVID lockdowns. These, unfortunately, required a 6 month break from production. “Going from sharing whiskeys in New Orleans bars to masks, visors and three COVID tests a week in Los Angeles has been a massive adjustment,” according to Netflix. “But the cast and crew quickly acclimated to the new normal,” and had fun along the way.
