What You Can Do at the Library Beyond Borrowing Books – City of Beaumont, Texas

Did you know there is four branches of the municipal library in Beaumont? Each has unique services and programs that they offer to the public. From learning a foreign language to making origami dinosaurs, there are tons of things to do at the library that won’t give you a paper cut. Whether you’re a bibliophile or not, we guarantee you’ll find a form of entertainment to enjoy, and we guarantee it will be educational too!

Take a learning backpack

Quickly becoming one of the most popular library programs, each library branch is equipped with learning stations with dozens of see-through backpacks that can be checked out and borrowed for up to two weeks, just like other materials . They’re free and come with everything you’ll need for a lesson, family game night, or craft day! Literacy backpacks are designed for different age groups, from toddlers to elementary school children, and cover everything from potty training tools to learning about native insect species to dinosaurs.

If you’re feeling nostalgic and want your kids to experience these classic board games like Battleship, Connect 4, and Checkers, there are gaming backpacks with board games you can borrow!

For teenagers, be sure to check out the RC Miller Library Backpacks! This pilot program features backpacks for young adults, including specialized activities like calligraphy, origami-making, cartooning, doodling art, paracord friendship bracelets and more .

Get a monthly imagination kit

The very popular imaginative kits are available at the front desk of every library branch on the first of every month and are loved by all ages! These crafts are lovingly put together by library staff and include all the supplies you need to complete a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) based activity.

These kits challenge kids with projects like growing a plant from a lima bean, making a harmonica out of rubber bands, building their own sailboat, and more! These crafts are free to the public and do not require you to verify anything with a library card.

Join a book club

Want to start your own book club? Gather a group of friends and head to one of the library branches to pick up a fun title! The library has made this super easy with pre-made book talk kits complete with starter ideas on dozens of popular reads you can rent, as well as other materials!

The Elmo Willard Library also hosts a Book Lovers’ Club, a free monthly service where you’ll receive 2-3 books selected just for you, a personalized bookmark, and snacks to enjoy while you read! Simply visit the branch to register in person or call (409) 892-4988 for more information.

Learn on the go

E-books and audiobooks are a great alternative to traditional books! No more bulky, heavy bags that weigh you down or forget to return last week’s transport. With your library card, you have access to over 200,000 book titles with Overdrivea library of digital content, and the Libby app which provides access to thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines through a statewide shared cloud library. Volunteer opportunities are available at every branch of the library, so be sure to ask how your student, senior, or anyone else can get involved.
